Quentin Wilson Winter Driving Interview

Kevin Harris was the presenter in the studio this week as he posed the consumer questions to motoring journalist and television presenter Quentin Wilson, who was speaking as an ambassador for tyre manafacturer Goodyear.

As the UK prepares itself for another harsh winter, weather affected roads and possible delays, Quentin was offering advice for motorists looking to not have their driving plans and journeys disrupted over the coming winter period.  Winter driving requires a lot of skill and a vehicle that can handle the conditions, but new research shows that millions of us continue to drive in terrible British winter conditions without really preparing ourselves for the journey ahead.  Most notably not changing over to winter tyres.

Unlike other European countries like Germany where winter driving is almost an artform and regulated by the Government, in the UK most of us don’t change to winter tyres, and most of us have never been given lessons in driving in snow and ice.

As a qualified Alpine ski instructor, and someone who has driven to the Alps many times, arriving to resorts on snow and ice, Kevin is all to aware of the need to own a set of winter tyres and makes sure they are put on in the car in November and used until the Spring for both at home in the UK and when driving abroad.

Quentin had previously carried out a field test showing the extreme difference of summer and winter tyres in controlled environment at MIRA on behalf of Goodyear that mirrored the sensation of driving on ice and the results were quite remarkable.  When driving on the winter tyres, the car stopping distance was approximately seven car lengths less than when on summer tyres.  The winter tyre test video and further information on winter tyres and driving tips can be viewed by visiting www.goodyear.co.uk
